Thank Heaven for the Little Girls’ Department

Remember the Sex and the City episode, when Samantha finds out that her less then average size date shops at the young men’s department at Bloomingdales. Lets be honest, that might be a bit of a mood killer. But is it a double standard? I have a confession to make. I do it. I shop at Gap Kids. I’ve even been known to buy a gap kids shoe. Mock if you must, but before you do, you should know that a girls 4.5 is somehow equivalent to a Women’s 5 ½. My closet is proof. Not only can you save A LOT of money by acting on this little style secret, but there is actually really CUTE style to be found in the girls department, in some cases, cuter then what the older crowd has to offer.

Case in point: Target. I’ve spent many an hour in the girls dept at Target; their pants fit be better then some designer clothes, and their dresses are adorable, if I can find the biggest size. I recently found this amazing dress in the Gwen Stefani for Mini Harujuku collection. The first thing I thought of when I saw it was the Alexander Mcqueen I had recently seen on Rihanna, so I scrambled for the XL, and in my shopping bag it went. I wore it to a 30th birthday party last weekend with black skinny jeans and chunky boots. Everyone loved it, and I got a million compliments. Others might take that opportunity to plead the 5th, and say thank you, but I proudly admitted my place of purchase. Perhaps because I’m not the tallest girl in the group, it became acceptable, and maybe charming. Or maybe some style just bridges the gap between girl and woman. Either way, I’m thankful for it.

After taking flight after the Golden Globes last week, actor Ewan McGregor was spotted out and about in New York on Tuesday. The photogs caught up with the Salmon Fishing in Yemen star yesterday, as he headed out of his Manhattan hotel. Dressed in a casual city ensemble of dark jeans, oxfords and a striped sweater, Ewan looked quite fashion forward during his leisurely stroll around the Big Apple.

Though we haven’t seen much of Nicky Hilton since she spent her holidays in Aspen, the stylish socialite stepped out and about yesterdayfor a shopping spree at Barney’s in Beverly Hills. Donning a bold and bright sweater with dark skinny jeans, Nicky made a casual fashion statement of her own on Tuesday afternoon, after she stepped out of the luxury department store with shopping bag in tow.

Zach Braff is across the pond in London, and he greeted fans (and paparazzi) as he made his way into ITV Studios for an interview on ‘This Morning.’

Zach looks like he’s into fashion, if this outfit is any indication. The former ‘Scrubs’ star is looking good!

Bring Out the Past

And we’re back. Today in ways to recycle old clothes, namely the bodycon mini skirt you accidentally purchased in 2008 during an unusual lapse of good judgement: meaningfully layering loads of better judgement over the bodycon mini skirt you accidentally purchased in 2008 during an uncomfortable lapse of good judgement. It’s a quick six step process that requires fewer layers more evenly distributed than typically…distributed. Today it seems, I can’t compose one single proper English sentence. I’d suggest you simply skim the below content, it’s for your own good.

I know what you’re thinking, I’m right there with you and yes, it’s true: BCBG. I figure if there’s any way to successfully host a round of Getter to Repeller, it’s proper to start where things are tight, simple, leggy. On an unrelated note too, now that I think of it, the shoes, found in the trenches of a sample sale room last season, are probably an interesting homage to yesterday’s look at Balenciaga pre-fall 1981 2012.

sweater: Club Monaco

In an easy effort to start the layering process, here’s one thick sweater that stays in true spirit of what conventional New York dressing is about: forgetting that real color exists. You can’t see it now but there are some fly suede patches residing on my elbows like cool little elbow dwellers that enjoy a good flex every now and then.

tights: Hue

I’m not sure if I meant to wink, but I’m happy this photo turned out as it did. Step three starts the distribution-of-layering process. Black tights have this magical way about them where even the tightest of skirts lose their leggy factor with just a small kiss of the inevitable opaque hovering.

second skirt: Miu Miu

In this step, I reverse the initial skirt so that the upside-down V coyly pointing to the nether regions are now behind me, alluding to Uranus, and include another skirt-as-peplum. It’s an easy and relevant winter fix that gives new dimension to clothes you may have dubbed unwearable. I’ll take this a step further and say man repelling kind of preaches that with the right layering tactics and facial expressions, nothing is ever unwearable.

headpiece: Young & Ng, shoes: Alexander Wang

And now, the accessory change. Generally speaking, headgear is ambiguous, most often pretentious and so always perfect. Pumps on the other hand, fine sometimes but you never know when life may take you on a spontanteous trip to the moon. Be prepared with the right footwear.

Detail shot, bla bla bla. So many bracelets, so little arm space. Hardware and knit threads can’t seem to get along and thus perfecting the art of partying with your limbs has proven uncomfortable in a colder climate. Should you find yourself in this predicament, steer clear of crystals, revive your old friendship bracelets. And to put speculations to rest about the frizzy freak growing everywhere, behold the final step:

Brighten Up Your Winter

A bright orange coat can really transform your outfit

For me winter is the best time of year to accessorize!

Whether it be one of the millions of scarfs I own to the newest tech geek craze of touch screen gloves. There are endless options to express yourself with accessories throughout these next few dreary months.

So don’t let yourself get caught up in the January through March slump, this is the time to be fun, creative, and to express the brightness in you!

Red is DEFINITELY Elizabeth Banks’ color! Though she was the epitome of a golden girl at the Jan. 23 premiere of Man on a Ledge, Liz looked radiant in red on Tuesday afternoon! Joined by fellow actress Annette BenningElizabeth posed for multiple pics at the Conservatory Awards Luncheon held in San Francisco on Jan. 24. While I’m totally in love with Elizabeth’s red-hot look, I wonder what her Hunger Games counterpart Effie Trinket would think.

Katherine Heigl looked stunning in her red dress at the ‘One For The Money’ premiere in New York City last night. LOVE her look! She is one of the most glamorous actresses in Hollywood. Are you planning to see the big screen adaptation of Janet Evanovich’sbest-selling novel, ‘One For The Money’? Stephanie Plum is such an iconic character at this point that Katherine’s got her work cut out for her, trying to portray her on the big screen!

With not one, but TWO films in theaters, Kate Beckinsale is certainly one busy Hollywood bee! Though she’s already finished the promo rounds for her flicks in the states, its audiences overseas that are now getting their dose of the screen siren. On Jan. 25, Kate stepped out for Underworld: Awakening’s Madrid photocall. The actress struck a few poses in a fab red frock, as she continued to flash her mega-watt smile to the photogs.

I’m lovin’ this look on Kate, are YOU?!

The spring trends are shouting cobalt as the ‘it’ color. Joanna Hillman (Senior Fashion Market Editor, Harper’s Bazaar U.S.) and Caroline Issa (Executive Fashion Director, Tank Magazine) already sported the color.

Which will you take after? Will you wear the color as your top or your bottom?

Spring 2012 Color: Cobalt Blue

Spring 2012 RTW: Tibi, Elie Saab, Karen Walker, Milly, and Burberry.

The runways for spring were sprinkled with pops of cobalt blue, which is a perfect alternative for those that aren’t keen on a typical pastel palette. This bold color adds a sophisticated punch when worn in the form of tailored blazers and blouses, but is electric and playful when worn as handbags or statement jewelry. Get a head start and add this color to your wardrobe before all the blue-fanatics snatch it up this spring.

Balenciaga Pre Fall 1981? Nope, 2012!

Looks a lot more like Balenciaga Pre Fall 1981. Fashion is great because it can be whatever you want it to be. For Nicolas Ghesquiere, this collection was as Hamish Bowles noted, a salute to the eclecticism of postmodernism. So many prints, so many layers, so much color, eureka. Every bit unappealing to the male-eye. I don’t think I’ve seen an homage this dedicated to reliving the past since the actual past. And I wasn’t even there, which does theoretically rid me an authoritative license but then again, doesn’t photographic proof that hails from the trenches of my mother’s twenties count for anything?

No detail went spared. Note the ambiance: florescent lights. Note the threads: colored tights, zebra prints, metallic parachute pants. The footwear: pointed toes and short heels. The jewels: chandelier ear adornments. The beauty grind: slicked back and banging, heavy eyeshadow. It will be interesting to see the high street interpretation of this collection.

And finally, another season of undermining the importance of vision with headgear that doubles as face-gear. I can get behind the notion of shielding ones eyes, great for infants or manfriends struck with the plague of man-repellers-for-lady-friends, but what happens when you just…want to see? Oh, you take it off? Interesting. Overall, I commend the overwhelming theme commitment and attention to detail, most notably, a certain pair of lampshade gloves. But what do you think? Do share.

Affordable Trina Turk

As you can probably tell, as much as I love couture, my wallet does not, so I’m always looking for a fun — and affordable — way to wear the trends I love.

Unless you’ve got a trust fund, really wealthy significant other or a magical way of making money in your basement, I’m thinking you agree!

Trina Turk’s Banana Republic collection fits right into my needs — easy to get (at my mall) and affordable. And I really love how Banana Republic’s clothes wash and wear. It’s a resort collection — inspired by Palm Springs according to the Huffington Post – and items will be priced from $49.50-$150. It will debut in June, so now all that’s left is to figure out a way to sneak away to an affordable resort to show it off!

If you liked the Mad Men-inspired collection that came out late last year, I think you’ll love this.

I can’t wait to get my hands on those floral shorts — which is another big trend for spring!
