Tracy Reese Fall 2012: Grey Skies Are Gonna Clear Up

Tracy Reese Fall 2012 - FlyandMighty

A look from Tracy Reese's Fall 2012 runway show

For her Fall 2012 collection — her 12th season showing at the Fashion Week tents! — Tracy Reese presented her collection against a massive mood board of the graphic shapes, bold colors, and patterns which the models entered the runway from. The pieces (referenced in the the mood board) heavily referenced the ’60s mod with graphic shapes and ’70s boho complete with fur-collared belted trenches and blinging embroidery. TMetallic pockets blocked onto black and red shorts evoked the ’80s. It was a very young and happy statement, refreshingly cheerful given the grey skies and freezing temperatures just outside the tents; and a note of ebullient optimism considering these economic times.

Mimi Plange Fall 2012: Serious Luxe

Mimi Plange Fall 2012 - FlyandMighty.com

Mimi Plange was inspired by Celtic beading patterns

In the five years since Mimi Plange announced herself as a designer, she has racked-up high-placed and high-fashion fans. Everyone from Rihanna to Michelle Trachtenberg to Princess Astrid of Belgium have donned her pieces known for their luxurious attention to detail, while Vogue‘s Andre Leon Talley and Rachel Zoe attended her spring 2012 presentation in support of her talent. As if that weren’t enough icing on Plange’s cake, she was featured in the coffee table book New African Fashionand included in a New York Times piece on the title. The cherry? Manolo Blahnik teamed up with her to create custom shoes.

Fresh off the momentum of the last few months, Plange presented her Fall 2012 collection in the penthouse suite of the swanky Setai 5th Avenue Private Residences. Inspired by an imaginary surrealist Nordic forest, Plange built a collection around the ancient Celtic knot, interpreting it into intricate beadwork on seriously luxe gowns and dresses.

Plange employed texture to tell her fall 2012 story. If her pieces weren’t beaded, they were fluffy with mongolian fur and mohair, and soft to the touch with alpaca wool, silk, and velvet. Shape was also a key theme as retro box cut dresses and coats emphasized the waist in some way, whether with belted waists or panels of fabric.

I look forward to seeing more from Plange in the seasons to come!

L.A.M.B. Fall 2012: Mad for Mod

LAMB Fall 2012

It was love, angel, mod, baby at Gwen Stefani’s L.A.M.B. presentation last night in the Box at Lincoln Center. Sixties music blared in the background as models worked boxy silhouettes and beehives in the lineup. Short, Twiggy-esque hemlines and bold graphic prints were evocative of the era. Another trend worth noting? Philippe Matignon sheer knee-highs layered over sheer stockings. It was just groovy, baby.

Malandrino Fall 2012: Mighty Aphrodite

A look from Catherine Malandrino's Fall 2012 collection - FlyandMighty.com

Oversized paillettes stitched onto a sheer net dress at Malandrino

Beyonce‘s stylist Ty Hunter, Gossip Girl‘s Kelly Rutherford, Vogue‘s Hamish Bowles, and designer Elie Tahari were among the fans that braved the 33 degree temperature Sunday morning for Catherine Malandrino’s Fall 2012 presentation. Manhattan’s Eyebeam Studio was packed to capacity as photographers, bloggers, and editors jostled to snap photos of dresses that seemed to be the result of the most glamorous fishing expedition ever.

A new kind of fishnet

The net went into the water, and out came sparkling paillette scales and shards of glittering black fabulously patched onto mesh dresses. The models’ hair was slicked back with a wet sheen to look like they had just come out of the water.

The mesh motif was carried out across the collection which was meant to be a statement on the juxtaposition of “virtue and vice” according to the press notes as patent leather was blocked onto wool jackets, a shrunken cardigan topped a patent pencil skirt, and a sporty letterman jacket was re-imagined with mohair and a sprinkle of sequins.

Needless to say I loved every minute of this collection. I can’t wait to see if any of the looks make it onto a future Gossip Girl episode or on new mama Beyonce.

Erin by Erin Fetherston: Enchanted Forest

One of the enchanted looks at the Erin By Erin Fetherston Fall 2012 presentation - FlyandMighty.com

One of the enchanted looks at the Erin By Erin Fetherston Fall 2012 presentation

After standing shoulder to shoulder in a never ending line, when I finally (!) walked in to the studio where San Francisco native Erin Fetherston’s Fall/Winter line was showcased, I immediately entered a different world. Draped in delicate silk chiffon dresses embellished with crystals and sequins, I could not help but be whisked away in all of the elegance. Each piece gave off an imperial but romantic feel, with a modern twist that I absolutely loved. Every so often I would look around for Prince Charming to make an entrance and sweep the models off their feet, but I guess he was running late.

Lacoste Fall 2012: Haute Slopes

Colorblocked ski-inspired dresses from Lacoste's Fall 2012 Collection

Artistic director Felipe Oliveira Baptista presented colorblocked dresses inspired by vintage ski apparel

For Fall 2012, Lacoste artistic director Felipe Oliveira Baptista extended his brilliant spring 2012 reinvention of the pique polo, presenting slopes-ready incarnations of colorblocked second skin mini dresses. As “snow” swirled in massive rectangle-shaped cubes that divided the runway, models bounced in a parade of paper thin leather vests, quilted leather jackets, fitted equestrian snowcaps, and luscious tweed-printed silks complete with snow goggle-inspired sunglasses.

Considering the snow swirling outside Lincoln Center this morning, Baptista’s collection felt right on time, albeit less inspiring than his spring collection, even as it drew inspiration from the Lacoste archives. As with several other shows, colorblocking and texture were key themes. Are you ready for leather-sleeved coats and colorblocked everything next fall?

Correll Correll Fall 2012: Opposites Attract

Correll Correll Fall 2012 -FlyandMighty.com

A blaze-red blazer & colorblocked knit balanced against a graphite skirt in Correll Correll's Fall 2012 collection

New York-based Berliner twins Daphne and Vera Correll are all about balancing opposites and that was evident in their fall 2012 collection. Rich blues and splashes of burnt orange (colorblocked) elegantly draped the pale skinned models standing against stark white walls Friday night at the Correll Correll show. It’s clear the twins took an incredibly hands-on approach with the collection’s designs. Hand-dyed georgette and hand knit metallic, mohair, and merino yarns made art of floor-length silk skirts and dresses, and hand-knit coats.

Charlotte Ronson Fall 2012: Hot Tub Time Machine

A printed sweater in Charlotte Ronson's Fall 2012 collection

Charlotte Ronson presented ski lodge separates & aviator-inspired hoods in her fall 2012 show

Charlotte Ronson’s fall 2012 collection conjured images of apres ski fireplace huddles (mind you, I’ve never been skiing, so I’m going purely off ski cliches and campy ’80s movies with this reference), thrift store digs, and Amelia Earhart. From the Christmas/Cosby ski sweaters to the dark floral print dresses, the collection felt decidedly vintage in reference, yet interesting modern details stood out.

Detached knit and leather aviator-inspired hoods, and backless leather shirts built upon the reference, but they were only blips in the show. I wish Ronson had taken those ideas further.

Meanwhile, her front row was a constellation of stars. Russell Simmons and niece Angela Simmons joined Nicky Hilton, Gina Gershon, Niki Reed, Jessica White, Kim Kardashian BFF Jonathan Cheban, and even a dog that posed on Angela Simmons lap for this pic!

Jen Kao Fall 2012: All Mixed Up

The opening look at Jen Kao Fall 2012 - FlyandMighty.com

Jen Kao opened her Fall 2012 show with this quilted fur puffer topped with an equestrian cap

Jen Kao’s Fall 2012 collection was a salad bar of references — equestrian, urban luxe, grunge, goth…  I loved parts of it, namely the quilted fur puffer above that opened the show (this image doesn’t do it justice), but presented as a collection, a plaid dress cinched with a corset-sized belt followed by a poncho dress, then a maxi leather dress, then a colorful patterned top encrusted with sequins, etc. just didn’t feel cohesive.

Zoe Kravitz took in the show from the front row.

Yigal Azrouel Fall 2012: I’m Rich, B!#ch

Maxi length look in Yigal Azrouel's Fall 2012 collection - FlyandMighty

How can you not bounce like a model in a skirt like this?

Between the fluffy fur trapper hats that topped the looks, the fur-covered pumps, and the full-length fur coat, Yigal Azrouel‘s fall 2012 collection was made for the haute little rich girl who likes her sportswear luxurious and full of the kind of character you usually find at an estate sale. There was nothing soft about the urbane decadence Azrouel presented.

A full-length fur coat in Yigal Azrouel's Fall 2012 Collection

The dresses were cut to match the uber-confident/cocky bounce of youth, the leathers were tough and head-to-toe, and the cardigans were boyfriend. The palette carried out the chic concrete jungle theme with hunter greens, dark berries, black and vintage florals. In sum, I thought the collection was sick (as in amazing). If only I were a rich girl… nananana…
