Paris Fashion Week: 3 Spring 2011 Trends We Can’t Wait For!

1. TWO-TONED SHOES
Jean_Paul_Gaultier_two-toned_shoes_Bluefly_blog_Flypaper-400.jpg
The shoes at Jean Paul Gaultier’s Spring 2011 show were mismatched, double stiletto-heeled, and two-toned. Any of these executions would wake up a sleepy outfit, though the two-toned look seems like it’d be most likely to come back around when the trend does its full-circle revolution.
>Killer Shoes by Fendi, Gucci, Alaia, & more — starting at 20-40% off retail!
2. SKIRTS WITH DETAIL
Nina_Ricci_drawstring_leather_skirt_Bluefly_blog_Flypaper-400.jpg
Unless they’re micro-short or blindingly-patterned, skirts are usually reliably conservative, free from details other than the odd pleat or tuck. Enter the fetching leather skirt with box pleat and layered hem Nina Ricci sent down the runway in Paris at her Spring 2011 show. The adjustable drawstring detail and flat pleats raise hopes that it’ll suit infinite frames.
>LOVE these skirts by BCBG, Zac Posen, Chloe & 3.1 Phillip Lim too!
3. DRESSES THAT TAKE UP SPACE
Chanel_Spring_2011_dress_takes_up_space_Paris_Fashion_Week_bluefly_blog_flypaper-crop.jpgViktor_Rolf_Spring_2011_dress_takes_up_space_Paris_Fashion_Week_bluefly_blog_flypaper-crop.jpg
We love our dresses simple and stunning, but for spring 2011 Chanel (left) and Viktor & Rolf have challenged us to make room in our closets for bigger silhouettes. I’m not sure I’d specifically wear the triple bold-shouldered button down dress Viktor & Rolf conjured or the cotton candy-colored confection Karl Lagerfeld created, but I love the idea of a dress that takes up space.

Would You Wear Mismatched Shoes on Purpose?

Mismatched_double_stiletto_Mary_Janes_at_Jean_Paul_Gaultier_Spring_2011_Paris_Fashion_Week_Bluefly_blog_Flypaper-250.jpgWhat about double stiletto heel pumps? Or slip-on, cut-out, lace-up boots? For his Spring 2011 show at Paris Fashion Week this past Saturday, Jean-Paul Gaultier accessorized his looks with surreal shoes. The mismatched shoes and double stiletto heels are intriguing to me; the slip-on Doc Marten lookalikes, not so much. What say you?

Milan Fashion Week: 6 Spring 2011 Trends We Can’t Wait For!

1. COLORBLOCK PLEATS
Marco_de_Vincenza_Spring_2011_colorblock_pleats_Bluefly_blog_Flypaper.jpg
It’s the simple things that have the most impact. Just by using color, Marco de Vincenza added fresh relevance to pleated dresses and skirts.
>We’re pleased to present these Pleats at 40% off retail!
2. CHIC ANIMAL PRINTS
Trussardi_1911_Spring_2011_celever_animal_print_Bluefly_blog_Flypaper.jpg
Let’s call a cat a cat. Animal prints can get pretty close to tacky if they’re not done right. For spring 2011, Trussardi 1911 presented some molto cool incarnations.
>Here kitty-kitty: Shop Animal prints
3. STATEMENT SWEATERS
Moschino_Cheap_Chic_Spring_2011_statement_sweaters_Bluefly_blog_Flypaper.jpg
Why should t-shirts have all the fun? The Moschino Cheap & Chic Collection answered with a sun-colored statement sweater.
>Get yer fresh cashmere & wool sweaters starting at 20-40% off retail!

4. THE SPLIT PERSONALITY SPRING TRENCH
DSquared_Spring_2011_Trench_Bluefly_blog_Flypaper.jpg
Half of this DSquared coat wants to be a trench, the other half wants to be a cropped jacket, but we love all of it ’cause it’s all the better to show off the cool spring outfit underneath as seen here.
>Shop trench coats by Burberry & more!
5. THE RETURN OF THE BUBBLE SILHOUETTE
Jil_Sander_Spring_2011_return_of_the_bubble_Bluefly_blog_Flypaper.jpg
Remember when you couldn’t flip through a magazine without seeing a bubble skirt or dress? Jil Sander has brought the silhouette back with dresses and intriguing maxi-length skirts. The look isn’t for everyone, but on the right shape at the right length, it’s a flattering silhouette.
>Ready for bubbles?
6. LACE
Brioni_Spring_2011_Lace_Dress_Bluefly_blog_Flypaper.jpgSalvatore_Ferragamo_Spring_2011_Lace_Bluefly_blog_Flypaper.jpg
For several seasons now, lace has been threatening to make a comeback with chic not-your-gradmother shapes and styles. At Brioni and Salvatore Ferragamo there were retro-chic incarnations we would have no problem slinking into.

London Fashion Week: 4 Spring 2011 Trends We Can’t Wait For!

Clicking through the spring 2011 London Fashion Week slideshows, the designers seemed fixated on deconstructing and reinventing different elements of the suit from the shirt to the vest to suit itself. Even lace looks evoked menswear. Check out a few of our faves below.
1. THE DRAPEY SUIT VEST
Kinder_Aggugini_Spring_2011_Bluefly_blog_Flypaper.jpgKinder_Aggugini_Spring_2011_Bluefly_blog_Flypaper-2.jpg
The slouchy drapey construction of the vests Kinder Aggugini sent down the runway soften what’s usually a very sharp masculine piece.
>We’ve got drapey, fringe, & cropped vests on sale!
2. THE MAXI-LENGTH SKIRT SUIT
Unique_Spring_2011_Bluefly_blog_Flypaper-Maxi_Skirt_Suit.jpg
By slitting the skirt and choosing bright buttons for this dark jacket, Unique transform what could have been a dowdy look into a strong statement.
>Check out these maxi skirts by Chloe, Elizabeth & James and more!
3. THE TUXEDO-INSPIRED DRESS
Antonio_Berardi_Spring_2011_Bluefly_blog_Flypaper-Tuxedo_Inspired_Dress.jpg
It’s a simple detail, but the white lapels on this Antonio Berardi dress make all the difference.
>Shop lapel-detail coats, blouses & blazers
4. THE UPDATED SHIRTDRESS

Vivienne_Westwood_Red_Label_Spring_2011_Bluefly_blog_Flypaper-Updated_Shirt_Dress.jpgDaks_Spring_2011_Bluefly_blog_Flypaper-2.jpg
Daks (top left & bottom right) presented maxi-length shirt dresses while Unique (top right) designed a shirt mid-calf-length shirt. Vivienne Westwood kept her Red Label shirtdress (bottom left) blousy and sporty, popping with color.

NYC Fashion Week: 11 Spring 2011 Trends We Can’t Wait For!

1. THE CHUNKY SUMMER SWEATER
Jason_Wu_for_Tse_Spring_2011_Bluefly_blog_Flypaper.jpg
Can you believe this “sweater” is made out of silk? Jason Wu hand wove silk to make this exquisite sweater and sweater dress for his collection for Tse.

2. 3D FLORALS
Nanette_Lepore_Spring_2011_Bluefly_blog_Flypaper-200.jpgMarc_Jacobs_Spring_2011_Bluefly_blog_flypaper-200.jpg
Florals are going to be big next season — literally. In Marc Jacobs’ Spring 2011 collection, exotic leather and fabric flowers plumed from shoulders, collars, and waistlines while Nanette Lepore made her flowers graphic and sequins. At Thuy too, the graffitti petal prints were practically pluckable.
>Pick flowers on Bluefly — at a major hook-up!
3. BERMUDA-LENGTH SHORTS
Elie_Tahari_Spring_2011_Bluefly_blog_Flypaper.jpg
We still love our short-shorts, but it’s not every day we want to be cheeky. The just-above-the-knee length knickers at Nicole Miller, Elie Tahari, Elise Overland, and VPL by Victoria Bartlett present a great option for those sticky summer days when you want to stay cool but still look put-together.
>Shop shorts for spring & fall!
4. THE UPDATED TRENCH COAT
Kimberly_Ovitz_Spring_2011_400.jpg
Kimberly Ovitz‘ deconstructed trench coat was one example of the genius ways designers reinvented the spring staple.
>MAJOR sale on trench coats by Burberry & more
5. THE SHEER EVENING GOWN
Carlos_Miele_Spring_2011_Bluefly_blog_FlyPaper_400.JPG
Not sure how practical they are, but love-love-LOVED Carlos Miele‘s translucent maxi gowns. Gorgeous, aren’t they?

6. BRIGHT POPS OF COLOR BALANCED WITH WHITES & KHAKIS
Mandy_Coon_Spring_2011_Bluefly_blog_Flypaper.jpg
Designer Mandy Coon’s whole collection was white, khaki, and black with shocks of poppy.
>Shop khakis on Bluefly
7. THE BLOUSE DRESS
Chris_Benz_spring_2011_Bluefly_blog_Flypaper_blouse_dress.jpg
Blouses and blousy silhouettes were all over the Spring 2011 runways, and one of my fave incarnations was the blouse dress, a flowy, feminine alternative to the shirt dressperfect for work.
>Shop wear to work dresses
8. FLORAL SHOES
Chris_Benz_spring_2011_Bluefly_blog_Flypaper_floral_shoes.jpg
Alejandro Ingelmo designed the coolest floral platforms and wedges for Chris Benz’ presentation.
>Shop Louboutins & more on Bluefly
9. THE RETURN OF THE BELL-BOTTOM
Yoana_Baraschi_Spring_2011_Bluefly_blog_Flypaper_wideleg_bellbottom_pants.jpg
We’ve been calling them “widelegs” for some time now, but at the spring 2011 shows, the flares got too big for that politically correct label. Between Tory Burch, Chris Benz & Yoana Baraschi the bell bottom has made a comeback and they’re pretty fabulous.
>Shop widelegs aka bell bottoms
10. CROCHET | MACRAME | LACE
Vivienne_Tam_spring_2011_Bluefly_blog_FlyPaper_crochet_lace.jpg
With so many designers drawing inspiration from the ’70s for their spring lines, it’s no surprise crochet, macrame, and lace made a return. Vivienne Tam devoted much of her show to macrame jackets and sweaters while Catherine Malandrino and Trina Turk resuscitated it too for her “Palm Springs Eternal” line.
>Shop lace looks by Betsey Johnson, Stella McCartney, Vince & more!
11. ROUND BEATLES GLASSES

Christian Siriano: “I’ll Sleep When I’m Old!”

Christian_Siriano_is_on_Oprah.jpg
Ever since his Season 4 win on Project Runway Christian Siriano, the pint-size designer has been an Energizer Bunny producing capsule collections — remember the one he did for Bluefly — staging full-scale fashion week spectacles, inking lucrative deals with Payless, shooting his Bravo special, and opening up his closet and home for Bluefly’s cameras. Just days after showing his own spring 2011 collection, Betty Confidential caught up with him front row at the Lela Rose to find out if he’ll ever get any sleep.
Watch his answer here.

Jeremy Scott Spring 2011: Marilyn Monroe Manson

Jeremy_Scott_spring_2011_Bluefly_blog_Flypaper-400.jpg
Presenting to a celeb-packed crowd that included Solange Knowles, Kanye West, Kelly Osborne, and former Prince flame Appolonia Kotero (!!), Jeremy Scott showed a collection that played Marilyn Monroe’s iconic voluptuous pin-up sensuality against the liquid leather-zippers-chains aesthetic of Marilyn Manson, all while referencing commercialism and the economy. Models were styled with pincurls in blonde, red and brunette hair, cat eye shades, and head kerchiefs. A zippered leather pencil skirt, and liquid leather hot pants and bra combos punctuated the collection which also featured ironic statement tops that said things like “for rent”, “no sale is ever final”, and “thank you for shopping”. One standout dress interpreted a ticket stub, a horizontal “Admit One” prominently stamped along the front. Hems were mostly short or jagged; the palette a Stop Sign reminiscent red, black and white with moments of gray and blue.

Stephen Burrows Spring 2011: Big City Lights

stephen_burrows_spring_2011_collection_blueflys_blog_flypaper.jpgInspired by the kaleidoscope of colorful lights and rhythmic energy of Times Square, Stephen Burrows created an eye-catching, wearable collection of tops, skirts, short sets and dresses. Jersey, cotton, and raw silk were splattered with a rainbow-hued swirl pattern. The standout pieces: drapey cocktail dresses, a slinky floor-length button down dress, and slim cut harem pants. Special nod to the sightly retro white and tangerine tennis sets of shorts and skirts with cropped tops.
Verdict: A collection full of effortless, but bold, low-key statement pieces.
