1. THE CHUNKY SUMMER SWEATER

Can you believe this “sweater” is made out of silk? Jason Wu hand wove silk to make this exquisite sweater and sweater dress for his collection for Tse.

2. 3D FLORALS

Florals are going to be big next season — literally. In Marc Jacobs’ Spring 2011 collection, exotic leather and fabric flowers plumed from shoulders, collars, and waistlines while Nanette Lepore made her flowers graphic and sequins. At Thuy too, the graffitti petal prints were practically pluckable.

3. BERMUDA-LENGTH SHORTS

We still love our short-shorts, but it’s not every day we want to be cheeky. The just-above-the-knee length knickers at Nicole Miller, Elie Tahari, Elise Overland, and VPL by Victoria Bartlett present a great option for those sticky summer days when you want to stay cool but still look put-together.

4. THE UPDATED TRENCH COAT

Kimberly Ovitz‘ deconstructed trench coat was one example of the genius ways designers reinvented the spring staple.

5. THE SHEER EVENING GOWN

Not sure how practical they are, but love-love-LOVED Carlos Miele‘s translucent maxi gowns. Gorgeous, aren’t they?

6. BRIGHT POPS OF COLOR BALANCED WITH WHITES & KHAKIS

Designer Mandy Coon’s whole collection was white, khaki, and black with shocks of poppy.

7. THE BLOUSE DRESS

Blouses and blousy silhouettes were all over the Spring 2011 runways, and one of my fave incarnations was the blouse dress, a flowy, feminine alternative to the shirt dress — perfect for work.

8. FLORAL SHOES

Alejandro Ingelmo designed the coolest floral platforms and wedges for Chris Benz’ presentation.

9. THE RETURN OF THE BELL-BOTTOM

We’ve been calling them “widelegs” for some time now, but at the spring 2011 shows, the flares got too big for that politically correct label. Between Tory Burch, Chris Benz & Yoana Baraschi the bell bottom has made a comeback and they’re pretty fabulous.

10. CROCHET | MACRAME | LACE

With so many designers drawing inspiration from the ’70s for their spring lines, it’s no surprise crochet, macrame, and lace made a return. Vivienne Tam devoted much of her show to macrame jackets and sweaters while Catherine Malandrino and Trina Turk resuscitated it too for her “Palm Springs Eternal” line.

11. ROUND BEATLES GLASSES

Tracy Reese accessorized her models with these updated beatnik specs.
