Alexander Wang

Inspiration: Boxing

Highlights: Graphic silhouettes, flat angles, and foggy color palette. Wang focused heavily on outerwear, really honing his skills in tailoring for his customer’s body.

Elizabeth and James

Inspiration: the Olsen twins actual wardrobe

Highlights: Quilted Puffer Jackets, Hidden Textures, and leather overalls. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have graduated to become two of the most influential young designers in the business and this collection proves they are in it for the long haul.

Wes Gordon

Inspiration: Sgt. Pepper Kings Road – meets – Modern Harem

Highlights: Shimmery golds and copper brocades mixed with rich purple velvets and deep red suedes. Gordon may be young but his expertise is growing exponentially with a collection that is comfortably over-the-top!

Tadashi Shoji

Inspiration: Russian culture and history of Russian royal families

Highlights: Washed velvet gowns, subtle ‘regal’ prints, high necks, and “czarina” sleeves. Shoji has established himself as a member of the eveningwear elite. His dresses are celebrity fan-favorites and effortlessly survive the ebb and flow of modern trends.

Whit

Inspiration: Marianne Faithfull in her Mick Jagger days

Highlights: Fur-collared coats, A-line dresses, and even a cameo from a jacquard-print sweatsuit. Designer Whitney Pozgay presented a beautiful collection of pieces perfected with prep-school sensibility and vintage-inflected personality.

Nanette Lepore

Inspiration: the recent expedition to Mars

Highlights: Dark fabrics, kaleidascope prints, and angular separates. Lepore took a different approach this season by being subversive to the young, jaunty collections of the past. She infused wearable glamour into each piece making it appropriate for all age ranges.

Naeem Khan’s 2013 collections is the epitome of luxury. You will look like a million bucks in every single look.

The collection spawns elegant floral prints, bold colors and glorious gowns of elegance. I see many of them Oscar-dress worthy of our favorite starlets. Who do you want to rock these gowns?

Under construction: William Okpo Spring 2013 left the garments' construction to convey the collection's depth

“The William Okpo girl…walks to her own beat. Her style is innate and full of simplicity,” Darlene Okpo
explained in an interview introducing the line she founded with her sister Lizzy in 2010. Five seasons later, Darlene and Lizzy Okpo have stayed true to their vision, building a following of fearless fashion fans along the way.

Solange Knowles was among the throng that packed the fifth floor studio at Alvin Ailey’s Joan Weill Center for a close-up of the Okpos’ spring 2013 collection. Presented amidst artfully installed displays of oranges (the fruit), the collection stuck to a palette of denim blues with pops of orange, sienna, and a paintbrush-reminiscent polka dot pattern.

With nary a graphic print in sight, the sisters left each garment’s careful construction to convey the depth of the collection. Contrasting denim washes added interest to culotte pockets, while denim blue fabrics tricked the eye, masquerading as dungaree. A drawstring motif carried through the collection as well, cinching mini dresses and tank tops, and tapering jeans.

The structured slouch of the pieces reminded me of a vintage take on Yohji Yamamoto or Commes des Garcons with heaps of modern, metropolitan flavor. I won’t be surprised if a snap of Solange rocking one of the looks ends up on her blog soon, in fact I expect it.

Pops of sienna and contrasting denim washes added interest to the collection

Purple, teal and metallic, OH MY! Monique Lhuillier’s Spring 2013 Collection is consistent with her past–it’s beyond fabulous. Last season she stuck with more solid colors. I am glad she brought some amazing prints to her Spring line. I do think she the colors are a little dark for spring, but the cuts and silhouettes are so beautiful, you can’t do anything but love. Plus, she kept on trend with peplum!

Now, where is the next gala so these dresses can be worn and drooled over?

looks from Christine Alcalay Spring 2013

Christine Alcalay’s Spring 2013 presentation, held in a white-walled sun-bleached showroom, was the picture of crisp romance. Presenting lace in tailored pieces (shirts, blouses), and pairing them with structured skirts in muted pastels, the collection seemed as equally made for a jaunts through a rolling English countryside, as it did a spring/summer stroll to work. The most successful piece in my opinion was the sheer, dotted maxi skirt complete with thigh-high slit.

The 1950s are making a comeback, per the Spring 2013 Kate Spade collection.  The fabulous New York Fashion Week presentation featured punchy pinks, flouncy silhouettes, bold patterns, and quirky accessories.  Perfect for a May Day picnic!

Holy gorgeous! Hervé Léger By Max Azria Spring 2013 collection has an edgy daintiness. I think I need to explain. The collection sports leather harnesses and intertwining prints yet the crafted details are so elegant and sophisticated. The intertwining of patterns are perfection. I think you just need to see to understand fully!
