Fall 2012 Trends for Jackets

In case the chilly temps and pumpkin-flavored everything hasn’t quite hit you: fall is here. Jackets! Tall boots! And that first crisp breeze that makes you realize — it’s time for a new jacket. Before the really big chill comes, take advantage of these last few weeks of figure-flattering coverups. We’ve rounded up the best of the best trends from the fall 2012 runways, and (of course!) where you can score them.

  1. Leather Accents: This season, jackets are all about leather accents – like leather panels, collars or trims. Luckily, leather doesn’t have to be bondage-inspire to have a major impact. As noted on the fall 2012 runways of Yves Saint LaurentDKNY, and Just Cavalli, a little leather goes a long way.
  2. Quilted Moto: Cropped moto jackets get an aesthetic upgrade with intricate quilting detail on the sleeves, as seen on the fall 2012 Versace runway. Celebs like Twilight’s Kristen Stewart love this$2,100 Balenciaga Biker jacket, but you can also find the trend for as low as $160 from brands likeASOS and Free People.
  3. Varsity: Relive your high school glory days (or pretend like you didn’t eat lunch alone) with a grown-up letter jacket. Get the full effect with colorful sleeves — bonus points if they’re leather — like from Anna Sui and JW Anderson for Topshop
  4. Mixed Media: The marriage of fabrics was all over the fall runways: Reed Krakoff mastered fur and leather, Bottega Veneta mixed leather with satin, and now retailers are mixing everything from wool, canvas, flannel, suede and more.
  5. Tweed & Leather: No longer for ladies who lunch, tweed gets an instant dose of edge when paired with leather. As seen on the spring 2012 runways of DKNYCharlotte Ronson and others, the boucle trend is now for the downtown girl as much as the uptown one.

Taylor Swift’s Preppy Look

Let’s call it the Kennedy Effect. While Taylor Swift has always had a ladylike flair about her, dating presidentRobert F. Kennedy‘s grandson Conor has graduated her style to a land of preppy headscarves and polka dots. In fact, the singer was recently spotted in head-to-toe Ralph Lauren, including honest-to-goodnessLauren Ralph Lauren Stretch Twill Jodhpur Pants ($129). Jodhpur pants. Matched with burgundy Ralph Lauren Quintessa Velvet Loafers ($395) and Ray-Ban ‘Classic Wayfarer’ 50mm Sunglasses ($150), we’re guessing she must be off to a regatta or to stomp some divets.

You can get Swift’s exact prepped-out look now, and you don’t even have to buy a $5 million estate next to the Kennedy compound to do so.

Halloween Group Costume Idea: “Girls”

HBO Girls Halloween Costume Idea

Sex and the City was created during the 90′s era of excess and showcased the glamorous, albeit unrealistic, lifestyles of four NYC women. But this year, HBO birthed a new friends-in-the-city show that will officially take its place come Halloween: Girls. Yep, that’s right, we’re going to show you how to create a Girls Halloween costume–and dare we say it’s one of the best group costumes of 2012. In director Lena Dunham’s world, Brooklyn replaces Manhattan, plaids and cords replace Manolo Blahnik and Jimmy Choo, and grit replaces excess. The show’s quirky heroines – Hannah, Jessa, Marnie, and Shoshanna – stumble through New York in a post-college daze, navigating relatable problems (like, “I need a job!”) and cringe-worthy moments (like, “My boyfriend just peed on me!”).

Okay, that last one may be a SATC nod, but all in all, this Emmy nominated show was totally refreshing and awesome. Which makes it perfect for your all-girls costume. Don your plaids for Hannah, your prim sheath dresses for Marnie, your bows-a-plenty for Shosh and your hippie best for Jessa. And may we suggest a Bushwick warehouse party for Halloween night?

5 Tips for Apple Picking Attire

apple picking

Last weekend, I had the pleasure of traveling from my measly suburban Central New Jersey town to thepicturesque rolling hills of upstate Gardnertown, New York to spend some quality time apple picking with my family. I hadn’t been for almost a decade, so I was inordinately excited to get my hands on some fresh apple cider and cinnamon donuts. I figured I’d enjoy the scenery and leave the hard work (i.e. actual apple picking) to my uncles, who could lift up my young cousins to take their pick, so I wore my favorite beat up flats, a pair ofboyfriend jeans and a sweater. I was seriously ill-prepared.

Now that I’m one apple picking trip wiser, take it from me: here are five essential tips for spending the day roaming through an orchard in October, straight from our new book, Wear This Now.

1. Wear sneakers or boots with thick socks. You’ll be doing tons of walking (it’s amazing how many types of apple trees there are), and you’ll regret wearing footwear without any support. If you’re wearing anything open-toed, a few rotten apples will probably land on your feet because, you know, Murphy’s Law.

2. Resist the urge to throw on a pair of leggings or sweats (or worse, a dress!) that could rip if you’re battling branches. Instead, opt for a pair of skinny cargo jeans with tons of pockets for storing the goods.

3. Bring sunglasses. It may be October, but you’ll spend a lot of the day looking up into the trees, right where the sun is hovering. Protect your eyes and look chic in a pair of oversized Karen Walker sunnies or Persol Aviators.

4. Now’s the time to break out that down vest that’s been hiding at the back of your closet since last fall. Layer it over a comfy sweater that allows for all the inevitable reaching. Store an oversized parka in the car just in case it gets chilly.

5. Bring a hat. Unless you’re up at the crack of dawn, the sun will probably start setting before you’re ready to check out. You’ll need the extra coverage then.

Moccasins for All

There once was a day when driving moccasins were limited to middle-aged men and women who were off to the club and wanted a more tactile foot-to-pedal driving experience in their luxury cars. However, those days are long gone and this shoe has been democratized. From bright pink and orange to pebbled metallics, even the color choices available hint at a shoe that’s more punchy than prim. We wear ours like we wear oursmoking slippers – with just about everything. But if comfort is key for you, then driving mocs might come in ahead, as they are just a wee bit comfier than their smoking slipper cousin. Check out the round up for our favorite, totally not stodgy picks.

In case you were wondering, colorful jeans are absolutely still “in” for fall — just replace your neon and pastel ones from summer with jewel-tone pairs (but you already knew to do that). Her big sister wrote the book on colorful skinnies, and now Pippa Middleton is proving she’s a fan, too. The heir and the spare have collectively worn pretty much every color of the rainbow; most recently, Pippa in a hunter green hue (that is also incredibly on-trend). Ditch your boring blues and go for green in these slimming Tory Burch ‘Ivy’ Skinny Stretch Jeans ($195).
