Nicki Minaj Wanted to Be a Lawyer!

It might be hard to believe, but at one time Nicki Minaj considered being something other than an award winning rapper/singer.

In the March issue of Vogue on newsstands now, Nicki reveals that at one time she had other career plans, saying;

“A huge part of me wanted to be a lawyer! I would do a really good job as a prosecutor,”

I have a hard time picturing Nicki as anything other than the performer she is, but I think she could probably be anything she wants to be!  She also reveals how her education at LaGuardia High School was where she was introduced to her love of fashion;

“I was dressing in Tommy Hilfiger baggy shirts and Boss jeans, but then I met a person who dressed like a tiny lady—pantsuits, heels, lots of makeup. I thought she was larger than life. She once did my makeup—I had never seen myself made up before. I didn’t want to wash it off; I felt like I had one day to live this fantasy of being a glamour girl.”

She definitely is a glamour girl! You can read more in the March issue of Vogue featuring the lovely Adele on the cover.

The Pump Comeback

Jenna Lyons by Tommy Ton for Style.com
Among the sweeping statements I’ve made about this past Fashion Week: a salute to mature silhouettes, the reintroduction of excessive fur, an overwhelming amount of the p-word, few sentiments were left to tackle footwear. Trending this season though, more knee length boots than booties and perhaps more prevalently, era of the sky high platforms may or may not be nearing death. Its successor: a pointed toe pump. This doesn’t necessarily speak to the end of the platform, it’s just somewhat hard to craft an elegant pointed toe shoe when there are cinder blocks manifesting just below them. We grazed upon this subject right before the initiation of fashion week, but let’s flesh it out.
Photographed here from F/W 2012: Peter Som, Thakoon, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Prabal Gurung.
And there’s something to be said about that ankle strap too. Now, I remember taking note of a discreet diversion to footwear that stands closer to the ground last season, I didn’t think much of it other than, you know, oh shorter heels: too bad. But there’s a theory that says the higher the heel, the worse the economy and while I can’t speak for the collections of say, Theyskens’ Theory or Dennis Basso, the general consensus on heel height this season was a decent two inches shorter. On a larger scale, this theory about the correlation between fashion and economy suggests that consumers at large turn to more extravagant and outrageous fashions as a means to suspend the perils of real life.
And we know this season was less about wow, more about practicality so with all this new success fashion indicates may be in our cards, let’s say so long to the hooker heel and get shopping. It seems that Valentino may have had it right all along.
From left: Miu Miu gingham slingback, Sergio Rossi’s yellow suede pump, Christian Louboutin’sgold metallic toe, that may or may not still subscribe to a school of hooker, a pink suede ASOS pump, blue suede Carven slingback clad in bowCharlotte Olympia’s denim/raffia version–to perfect the tuxedo and because, well, not all of us are ready to quit platforms just yet, fire truck red a la Alejandro Ingelmo in patent leather, Aldo in orange suede and Alexander Wang in stark white. Thoughts?

Flash Mob at Stella McCartney Show!

Over the past few years flash mobs have been seen everywhere–from Times Square to London’s Fashion Week!

Stella McCartney Fall 2012 evening wear preview marched to its own beat! It introduced the new collection with a flash mob. The mob included both models and dancers. These performers stunned the crowd by dancing to Led Zeppelin’s Immigrant Song wearing the designer’s newest evening wear fashions.

This is definitely something I would love to see in person. This unique way of showcasing the newest collection added a little thrill to the usual serious nature of a runway. It’s a fun way to make the show stand out and clearly it has!

You have to check it out for yourself:

Lana Del Rey Makes Her Way through Mayfair

After enjoying a Mulberry-filled evening over the weekend, singer Lana Del Rey was spotted solo in London on Feb. 20. The soulful songstress bundled up in a beige trench as she stepped out in Mayfair last night.

With London Fashion Week just getting started, I have a feeling we’ll be seeing plenty more of Lana, as she continues to sit front row at all of the most talked-about shows!

DVF Does Denim For Current/Elliot

dvfcurrentelliot

Dreams really do come true: Now you can have DVF’s signature prints not just on wrap dresses and espadrilles, but on your jeans, too.

The legendary designer has teamed up with Current/Elliot to produce a line of denim in splashy, summertime prints. The line consists of two styles of pants (a skinny leg and a relaxed fit), a pair of shorts, a skinny skirt, and a wrap dress (this is DVF, after all). Click the slideshow above to see them all.

We’re way into the funky leaf-printed skinny jeans (and for $258, we’d find a way to wear those puppies practically every day).

Shop the full collection in the slideshow above, and don’t forget to check out our guides to the best colored jeanswhite jeans, and skinny jeans.

NYFW Fall 2012: The Look for Tweeting

Cut 25 jacket, Current/Elliott jeans, Christian Louboutin pumped up kicks, Alexander Wang hat.

Photo stolen from WGSN. Ra, ra, ra, just minding my own business, walking into Lincoln Center, pretending I have emails to send while actually just tweeting weird things on my massive(ly awesome) device. This was taken yesterday just before the Michael Kors show. As it happens, the shoes on foot are one of a kind–a sample that never went into production. I won them at a Christian Louboutin sale earlier this year, that was fun. But onto more relevant things: it is with great pleasure that I now inform you: the final show of my Fashion Week season is here, and there’s no better way to say so long than through a little Calvin Klein. So, stay tuned for a final round up. There we can recap and collectively salivate over the musings of Proenza Schouler. Jack and Laz haven’t done this good since that homage to surf culture ca. 2009. Until then, tootlez.

Happy Presidents’ Day

We’ll be back with our fashion news tomorrow! Enjoy the day!

These Prints Are Bananas

print1

Over shopping for blouses bedecked in flowers/hearts/polka dots/stripes/stars? So are we, and so are our some of our favorite online shopping sites. It’s pretty exciting to find our favorite objects become objets d’art on some cute tops lately. Apples? Forever 21 covered up a pullover with it. Feathers? Appropriately adorning a lightweight silk blouse from Topshop. Tassels? Hmm.. That’s a tough one. Nope, leave it to the quirkiest of Brits Vivienne Westwood to find the “fashion do” in the upholstery trim, which she applied on an assymetric top. The print of choice is inevitably random (and our slideshow may have missed a few a gems in shopping cyberspace), but the outcome is always in style.
