How Do You Feel About all the Fur at the Fall 2010 Shows?

l to r: furry looks from Elie Tahari, Michael Kors, and Malandrino

For their Fall 2010 collections, Marc Jacobs, Anna Sui, Michael Kors, Malandrino, Elie Tahari, Brian Reyes, Thuy… and scads more designers let the fur fly in the face of the persistent recession. There were full-on fur dresses and dresses lined with fur, elbow-length fur arm warmers, fur boots, fur bags — you name it, it had some animal hair on it. At many shows it even came in technicolors and patterns.
The fur wasn’t just restricted to the runways either. Editors and bloggers filled Bryant Park’s Tents and MILK Studios’ bench-style seats sporting super-luxe animals. “If there was ever a time to be wearing fur, it’s now,” one guest noted to a colleague as she swaddled herself in a shiny animal coat waiting for the doors to open for the Christian Cota Fall 2010 presentation, wet snow falling outside. What do you think? Is now the time to rock fur?

Slouchy, harem, and drop crotch pants were all over the Fall 2010 New York runways from the Charlotte Ronson show to G-Star to the Malandrino presentation (pictured above). But skinnies continue to be on trend as shown above at Elie Tahari. Are you Team Skinny or Slouchy?

Proenza Schouler Fall 2010: I’m a, I’m a, a diva.

proenza-schouler-fall-2010-bluelys-blog-flypaper.JPG
There isn’t one piece that I wouldn’t wear in Proenza Schouler’s Fall 2010 collection. Consisting of smartly chic short frocks, thigh high skirts and cropped jackets stamped out in sexy black leather, plushy fur, traditional plaids, and muted paisley and acid wash prints, each look was created with the ‘Everyday Diva’ in mind.
Take special style note of the leather tank, strapless ruffled mini dress and the maxi fur skirt.
My fave look is this high-waist pleated leather skirt above.

Anna Sui Fall 2010: The Urban Hippie

anna_sui_fall_2010_blueflys_blog_flypaper.jpg
Pulling from the psychedelic ’60s and a multitude of ethnic looks, Anna Sui teaches a lesson on how to mix your prints fabulously with her Fall 2010 collection. Mini-dresses and knee-skimming skirts were highlighted by ombre-colored fur, suede tassels, life-sized pendant chokers, circle shades, fur-line pilot hats and sexy printed tights.
Lively pieces that’re worth treating yourself to.

William Rast Fall 2010: Fashion Pirates of the Caribbean

william_rast_fall_2010_blueflys_blog_flypaper.jpgWilliam Rast Fall 2010 has A LOT of references: Native American meets hip-hop meets Kurt Cobain/’90s fashion fusion… even a less voluminous version of the infamous Seinfeld Puffy Shirt.
Yeah… this one’s a nay for me.

Michael Kors Fall 2010: Behold A Lady

michael_kors_fall_2010_runway_collection_chanel_iman_blueflys_blog_flypaper.jpgMichael Kors‘ Fall 2010 collection went back to a time when Americans especially the women got dressed. No special occasion needed: tea with the ladies, running down to the market or preparing dinner for your very hungry hardworking husband, back in the day, ladies dressed like, well, ladies.Never would the word ‘juicy’ be splayed across one’s derriere.
Keeping the color palette neutral (camel, ivory, black, steel grey), the lines long and clean, and the fur steady streaming down the runway, Michael Kors brought back elegant sportswear.
Sheer knits, stretchy thick and creamy jersey, prickly wool and lush cashmere were layered in monotones and cut into three piece looks that included duster jackets, knicker shorts, swaddling robe style skirts and gauzy translucent nipple baring sweaters, that often offered up a peek of pubes via the neckline.
Damning both furry animals and PETA alike, Kors indulged in fur: tripled buckle fur coats, sky-high fur trimming on enormous hoods and along floor-length trench coats, belted fur pencil skirts, A-line knee length fur dress coats, and tons of fur bags including hobos, shoulder bags and clutches.
Bits of evening glamor were thrown in via trimmed down Mermaid styled dresses of onyx sequins and stretchy muted golds.
Side note: interesting absence of both leggings and the underpants trend that will be so prevalent this spring.
Do it Mike!

Toni Francesc Fall 2010: Robo Chic

Toni_Francesc_Fall_2010_Fashion_Week_Bluefly_blog_FlyPaper-400.jpg
Toni Francesc’s Fall 2010 show was titled “Artificial Life” and, accordingly, his collection was a robo chic parade of pointed and tiered shoulders, and silvers and greys often patched or colorblocked onto black and brown shine and matte fabrics. Visual soundwaves broadcast on a double wide screen behind the models added to the comment on artifice Francesc was trying to make.

Christian Cota Fall 2010: Pat Benatar Meets Agyness Deyn

Christian_Cota_Fall_2010_Fashion_Week_Bluefly_blog_FlyPaper.jpg
Channeling ’80s punk-pop icon Pat Benatar, Christian Cota Fall 2010 rebelled against most of the trends that have dominated New York Fashion Week — no fur, harem pants, or chunky knits in sight. Instead, he chose to present painted prints stripped and patched onto black dresses and skirts, black leggings with an artist’s stripe running down the front of the legs, jackets with sequins embroidered into strategic patterns, and similarly punk-tinged fare. He rounded out the Pat Benatar-meets-Agyness Deyn vibe by topping the models with ombre grey bob wigs.

Thuy Fall 2010: Swarovski Stones + Fur + Shoe-Stockings

Thuy_Fall_2010_Fashion_Week_Bluefly_blog_FlyPaper-400.jpg
Thuy Diep’s Fall 2010 show presented a cubist parade of color, texture, and silhouettes at Bryant Park’s Salon. There were colored Swarovski stones on tear-drop shaped fabric to create a 3D paisley effect on skirts and dresses. There were hybrid shoe-stockings that had the models catwalking in tights that didn’t visibly end where the platform shoe began. And there were big elbow-length fur arm-warmers. There were also Real Housewives of New York in the House. Jill Zarin, Kelly Bensimon, and Alex McCord (with hubby Simon) posed for pictures in the front row.

G-Star Raw Denim Fall 2010: She Works Hard for the Money

G-Star_Fall_2010_Fashion_Week_Bluefly_blog_FlyPaper.jpg
Using boiled wool, heavy khaki, and, of course, denim, G-Star collection stylist Remco de Nijs set out to style what he called a “sophisticated authentic workwear” look for the Fall 2010 show at Hammerstein Ballroom last night. While John Legend, Agyness Deyn (see her talking to Liv Tyler just beyond the model?), and Miss Jay looked on from the front row, the models swaggered in fireman yellow jumpsuits, kelly green flared coats, bus stripe blue minidresses, and denim shorts and trousers with the odd graphic print. The drop-crotch silhouette which G-Star has been championing for several seasons dominated. Why does de Nijs think the drop crotch has become the focus of more and more designers? It’s new, de Nijs explains. “Women need innovation every season.”
