Fly Nation

This is not a blog. Okay, technically it is, but the point is, we didn’t create it to dispense lofty fashion counsel from behind oversized Jackie O shades. We built it because we ultimately want to interact with a Fly Nation of fashion lovers of every stripe (or floral). So whether you’re a professional fashion personality, card-carrying fashionista, or a closet shopaholic, if there’s an insane designer you think EVERYONE should check out, a great article/blog post you want to share/rant about, or you simply need to point out how crazy amazing Ann Curry’s been looking on the Today Show lately, this is the place to blog it—or read all about it!

Polyvore Live Fall 2012: Blogger Bazaar

Photo by Polyvore (via NY Daily News)

This past Monday evening, social fashion site Polyvore set to turn those ‘Monday Blues’ into ‘Monday Oohs!’. Partnering with cosmetic giant Covergirl, Polyvore gathered over two dozen fashion mavens to model looks from four young designers (and FIT alums!) for a large crowd at La Venue in Chelsea.

Polyvore chose twenty-three young women from the over 2,000 bloggers they work with via their fashion collage efforts. CEO Jess Lee said their goal is to find “the next Anna Wintours” by encouraging fashionistas to curate their own “editorial spreads” much like a magazine editor would. This event was Polyvore’s next step in tying together a cohesive digital and real-world experience for their users.

Over 25,000 Polyvore users tuned into the event via a live stream. With proud friends, family and fans in tow, Polyvore, Covergirl and the fabulous bloggerati put on one heck of a show! With rounding applause, the designers (Dana-Maxx Pomerantz, Lauren Bagliore, Sergio Guadarrama and Vengsarkar “Ven” Budhu) took their bow.

Some of our favorite looks included a red-silk blouse from Gavaskar Collection on De Lune‘s Claire Geist and a gorgeous color-blocked dress from Dana-Maxx on Raych from That’s Chic!

Carmen Marc Valvo Fall 2012: Crystal Clear

For his Fall 2012 Collection, Carmen Marc Valvo found inspiration in the slinky, fluid body of the python. With its winding hallways, the Nasdaq Building high above Times Square laid the perfect setting for Valvo to tell his story. Using the juxtaposition of light and dark in the film noir period, Valvo combined chic skin-tight dresses with black leather accents and asymmetrical detailing. He honored Lauren Bacall in his fall collection with a palette of ivory, black, camel and deep reds and browns.

DKNY Fall 2012: Belt It Out

As evidenced in Donna Karan’s DKNY Fall 2012 Collection – when in doubt, belt it. This season was full of cold-weather options like boxy fur jackets, cocoon coats with buttery leather sleeves, sporty puffer jackets and a handful of double-breasted wool pieces. But Donna Karan isn’t one to focus on one area – she’s got the behind-the-coat pieces covered too. Pencil skirts, slim trousers, constrictive maxi dresses and adorable leather mini-skirts will make for generous wardrobe pop items come fall shopping.

Highlights: boxy fur, cocoon coats, leather sleeves, puffer jackets, pencil skirts, leather minis

Trends Hit: navy knits, navy leather, leather sleeves, double-breasted wool coats, thick waistband belts

Timo Weiland Fall 2012: Neo Exotica

Photo by Astrid Stawiarz for Getty Images

Timo Weiland and business partner Alan Eckstein found close inspiration from the neo-punk New York – a time, they say, that “artists were really able to be artists”. A collaboration with Saga allowed the duo to experiment with fur for the first time which produced some ingenious mixes – like long wool trenches with fox-pelt waistbands. Both the men’s and women’s collections were subtle tweaks on the classic Timo Weiland touch of modernist silhouettes. The clothes offered a more than ideal foundation for a wardrobe of pop-texture staples.

Highlights: fur trim, silk prints, raccoon cuffs, cropped sweaters, floral kitsch

Trends Hit: grunge, neo-maximus, 90′s New York, leather skirting, fur

Accessories: simple chokers, black patent shoes, platform heels

Favorite Piece: beautiful navy cowl-neck cable knit sweater with a light floral skirt

Herve Leger Fall 2012: Roman Rites

Photo by Jason Kempim for Zimbio

What do you do when your iconic body-con dress has been mimicked a hundred times? You turn them into buttery leather and add harnesses. Max Azria’s Fall 2012 Collection for Herve Leger was a stunning ode to the Roman/Grecian days of yore. Every look that came down the runway featured leather straps and a corset waist belt. At it’s essence, it was exactly what you would expect from Herve Leger this season – pure and utter sexiness – just packaged in a much more S&M-style box. (Front Row was lined with stars like Nina Dobrev, Tinsley Mortimer, Holly Marie Combs, Kate Mara and Beverly Johnson).

Highlights: corset belts, leather harnesses, leather fringe skirts, champagne backless dresses, plunging necklines

Trends Hit: leather skirts, champagne fringe, body contour dresses, black patent dresses

Accessories: Minimal other than belts and corset harnesses

Favorite Piece: a gorgeous champagne colored knee-length dress with a brown leather chastity belt

Porter Grey Fall 2012: Prairie Home

Sisterly design duo Alexandra and Kristen O’Neill found inspiration for their Fall 2012 Collection from Native American textiles and prairie imagery. Known for their clean and polished feminine aesthetic, each piece in the collection was both effortlessly cool and completely wearable. Using leather in almost every piece, the duo crafted a very distinct look keeping in theme with a Native American vibe by adding in elements of burgundy and goldenrod. Covetable collection? Oh, yes.

Brandon Sun Fall 2012: Silent Assassins

When Brandon Sun began designing his Fall 2012 Collection, he looked to the ‘silent assassins’ in history to weave a tale of peaceful ferocity. Using his signature expertise in fur-based apparel, Sun presented a collection that was both fluidly bold but also incredibly tailored for his fan base of today’s initiators, leaders and innovators. These are pieces that quietly define strength and versatile democracy. This former J. Mendel designer knows his way around a fur and this collection is proof that the living dead can be a freeing experience.

Kaelen Fall 2012: In A Gilded Mood

With her namesake collection only two years underway, it’s amazing to see how far Toronto-bred Kaelen Haworth has come. Her Fall 2012 Collection was a wave away from the pleated silk separates she is typically known for designing. Taking a moodier avenue this season, she showcased gorgeous shearling jackets in neutral duo-tones, violent jacquard harem pants and a bevy of formal gold lamé separates.

Tadashi Shoji Fall 2012: Lace Me Up

The oversized lace backdrop was the perfect setting for Tadashi Shoji‘s Fall 2012 runway show. The crowd was silent as ethereal beats brought the models onto the catwalk. Bold hues of emerald and cobalt were obvious hits, while the sultry blood-orange tones in slimmer silhouettes got audible seals of approval from the audience. While many of the pieces featuring lace detailing could have easily come off as dowdy, a juxtaposition in delicate fabrics made them anything but.

Hightlights: lace details, flowing layers, cocktail dresses, floor-length gowns, ‘Golden Era’ vibes

Trends Hit: short dresses, lace brocade, emerald green, cobalt blue, blood orange, shift dresses
