Fly Nation

This is not a blog. Okay, technically it is, but the point is, we didn’t create it to dispense lofty fashion counsel from behind oversized Jackie O shades. We built it because we ultimately want to interact with a Fly Nation of fashion lovers of every stripe (or floral). So whether you’re a professional fashion personality, card-carrying fashionista, or a closet shopaholic, if there’s an insane designer you think EVERYONE should check out, a great article/blog post you want to share/rant about, or you simply need to point out how crazy amazing Ann Curry’s been looking on the Today Show lately, this is the place to blog it—or read all about it!

10 Tips for a Stress Free Prom

In a couple of weeks my freshman year of college will be coming to an end Yayyy!! (it’s bittersweet lol). Nonetheless, I remember so clearly this time last year my mind going crazy over prom! I used to think that prom was just about pretty prom dress and a fly date, but boy was I wrong; there is so much more to it. Here is a list of 10 stress free tips to make your prom most memorable.

  1. Prepare, Prepare, Prepare- Make sure your night goes as smoothly as possible don’t wait until the last minute for anything.
  2. Make sure your appointments are set- Walk-ins are hard to come by around this time so make sure your spot is secured.
  3. Make sure everyone knows the location of prom – No one wants to be late to their prom because of a lost driver or confused Uncle. Have a GPS handy!
  4. Make sure your dress fits- Your dress must fit your personality, your figure, your everything. Quiet as kept your dress is the focus of the night.
  5. Don’t try too hard to be different-Less is more when it comes to your prom look. Simplicity allows more room for accessories and maybe a pop of lip!
  6. Make sure you can walk in your heels- Your strut should be just as fierce as you.
  7. Carry a clutch-  You’ll be surprised how much it can hold–your phone, ID, money/card, keys and anything else you may need. Who wants to lug around a big bag anyway?
  8. Make sure your date is prepared- Although he doesn’t know it, he is an accessory. It’s only right that he matches your fly.
  9. Bring a change of clothes- The night eventually comes to an end and when it does you want to be cute and comfortable afterward.
  10. Enjoy the day- Relax!! You only get one Prom enjoy!!!

A Détacher Fall 2012: Samurai Meets… Psych Ward?

When the models first hit the runway at A Détacher’s Fall 2012 show with Ben Brunnemer playing in the background, it set the scene for a deranged warrior breaking out of the psych ward. (Yes, my mind went that far.) Long shapeless asymmetrical
wraps paired with constructed bobs evoked a sort of strait jacket fashion. However, there were pieces that got me excited. The highwaisted knit skirts and pants were definitely staple pieces. In sum, A Détacher presented an interesting story — a story I am still trying to understand.

After standing shoulder to shoulder in a never ending line, when I finally (!) walked in to the studio where San Francisco native Erin Fetherston’s Fall/Winter line was showcased, I immediately entered a different world. Draped in delicate silk chiffon dresses embellished with crystals and sequins, I could not help but be whisked away in all of the elegance. Each piece gave off an imperial but romantic feel, with a modern twist that I absolutely loved. Every so often I would look around for Prince Charming to make an entrance and sweep the models off their feet, but I guess he was running late.

Correll Correll Fall 2012: Opposites Attract

Correll Correll Fall 2012

A blaze-red blazer & colorblocked knit balanced against a graphite skirt in Correll Correll's Fall 2012 collection

New York-based Berliner twins Daphne and Vera Correll are all about balancing opposites and that was evident in their fall 2012 collection. Rich blues and splashes of burnt orange (colorblocked) elegantly draped the pale skinned models standing against stark white walls Friday night at the Correll Correll show. It’s clear the twins took an incredibly hands-on approach with the collection’s designs. Hand-dyed georgette and hand knit metallic, mohair, and merino yarns made art of floor-length silk skirts and dresses, and hand-knit coats.
