Fly Nation

This is not a blog. Okay, technically it is, but the point is, we didn’t create it to dispense lofty fashion counsel from behind oversized Jackie O shades. We built it because we ultimately want to interact with a Fly Nation of fashion lovers of every stripe (or floral). So whether you’re a professional fashion personality, card-carrying fashionista, or a closet shopaholic, if there’s an insane designer you think EVERYONE should check out, a great article/blog post you want to share/rant about, or you simply need to point out how crazy amazing Ann Curry’s been looking on the Today Show lately, this is the place to blog it—or read all about it!

Craving for Spring

During a routine interweb perusal yesterday I fell upon the bottom right pair of calf length Laurence Dacade studded boots and all the sudden the contents of my closet seemed obsolete, obscure, unworthy. I closed the browser though and exercised good judgement: it’s March and the loin heaters at hand run north of $1000. It was a mere twenty seconds though before I re-opened said browser and began to play a riveting round of If the Internets Were My Closet and that’s when I remembered the great thing about virtual fashion. Even if you can’t or maybe just won’t buy whatever product you’re craving, you can use the world wide web as your digital closet of sorts to style the items without unleashing a load on your wallet, get it out of your system and move on your merry way. It’s better to have good style that you can hold on to forever than just good things that will render irrelevant the following season anyway.

Today, we revolve three looks around the Laurence Dacade boots. At left: A yellow Carven coatpaired with grey Chaser t-shirt because it says Hookers and Sonia by Sonia Rykiel white silk pleated skirt with colors, Duke. Colors. Or a Karl by Karl Lagerfeld two tone leather vest paired over a flimsy and girly Theyskens’ Theory pink mini dress. Finally, a Topshop muscle tee under–yes, under–a black bustier bralette hybrid undergarment and skinny light wash jeans. The accessories remain the same: your neck will benefit from DANNIJO’s Medine bib or the array ofMono & Me adjustable bracelets clad in skull or star paraphanalia. They’re Colette approved friendship bracelets, and that’s cool.

Fly or ‘Bye: Katherine McPhee’s Evergreen Frock

OoOoO la la, look at Katherine McPhee in green! The Smash star rocked the red carpet in New York on Thursday night, where she attended the Caesars Entertainment kick-off event for Escape to Total Rewards at Gotham Hall.

Joined by former Spice Girl Melanie Brown and her beau Stephen Belafonte, along with the recently-engaged Katrina Bowden,Katherine and the crew all stunned in their chic, yet totally different ensembles.

What do you think of Katherine’s evergreen frock? Is it a fashion flop or a style “smash?”

These two sitcom stars sure know how to dress to impress! On March 1, Kaley Cuoco and Oscar nominee Melissa McCarthy stepped out for the Academy of Television Arts & Science’s 21st Annual Hall of Fame Ceremony at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

While bride-to-be Kaley sported a mint green blazer over her all-black ensemble, Melissa rocked a basic black frock with gorgeous peep-toe pumps.

Even though Kaley and Melissa may still be considered red carpet newbies, they already know how to work it like the vets!

Man Repelling with Milan Fall 2012

False alarm. The aforeposted BRB is actually just an RB. As in, right back, I am here. Hola. Bonjour. Many asked so I’ll have you know the sweater clad in shark eating nipple illustrating my “be back in a GIFfy!” is by Markus Lupfer. I thought I was going to Paris yesterday, I did not in fact go which yields good news and bad news, the good news is: steady posts, the bad news is: Paris is amazing. Never mind that though, let’s do what we did last week: talk the fleeting fashion week and continue forward with our lives. Up today: a look back at Milan.

We’ll start where most good stories about man repelling start: at Marni. I’ve been going back and forth in my head of heads contemplating a reversion to white tights. There’s a toddler at ballet quirky charm about them and paired with printed pants, clog open toe shoes and maybe the sporadic patent leather trench vest or red maxi cape, it’s a tale that reprimands the use of medical birth control as old as time. A redundant saying, yes, but so necessary to include sometimes.

Over at Dolce & Gabbana, I commend the consistency Stefano and Domenico pay to the stream of their collections. Ultimately it must be said, this is essentially a continuation of Spring. Sure, the sheer accents, lush gold appliques, vibrant use of color and interesting silhouettes render this a competing for first place top five favorite, but where’s the departure from comfort zone?

While you mull that over, we look to Prada, where for the fourth consecutive season, the collection maintains its signature Prada mystique without falling victim to this-is-just-last-season-with-tights syndrome. Long trench vest dress hybrids, geometric prints, quirky wool use, midi skirts over cropped pants and some shoes that look like they may or may not be dripping over onto the ground keep it fresh. The embellishments and un-contrived nature of the silhouettes keep it…Prada.

With the inclusion of copious cape coats that look like robes, skimpy sheath midi dresses and overall light, airy and flimsy vibe, Jil Sander plays with innerwear as outerwear motifs. Two of my favorite looks included a patent leather strapless a-line dress. How many of those do you own? Conversely, a jumpsuit that divides the tatas from the stomach and plays with the borders of semi-repelling. See, it’s fun for everyone.

A cropped black leather coat, brocade harem style pants, velvet accents, make-shift peplums and a small dose of floral print make Gucci the perfect combination of virtually everything. It’s black without being too dark, romantic without feeling too girly and high end art without exuding an element of unwearable.

There’s also a steroid-stricken cape, so…

And finally, I believe the Milan winner, winner chicken dinner this season was Roberto Cavalli who in an unapologetic manner dressed all his models like really expensive tents. Tiered layers of peplum, mermaid tails and sweater, sequined metallic parachute pants, and though I can’t say I’m thrilled about the leopard print blazer, holy hot loins. I want to be on you, part two.

Spotted: Blue Ivy in the Hands of Mama Beyoncé

Blue Ivy Carter Spotted In New York City

We can’t get enough of the princess to the hip-hop throne, Blue Ivy! The Tumblr is not enough!

All bundled up in what I would assume would be designer gear (do they make Louboutins for babies?), Blue Ivy made an appearance in the hands of her mama at the West Village restaurant Sant Ambroeus.

This better not be the last time we see this angel in public! We’ll await another glimpse! Beyoncé and Jay-z, make it happen…often!

Time for the Oscars!

11:35pm

And The Artist takes it home for Best Picture!! CONGRATS!

This was a fun awards season — with The Help and The Descendants battling it out for Best Picture, Jean Dujardin and George Clooney neck and neck, and Meryl Streep and Viola Davis trading trophies at the different shows, it was nice to have a little bit of a nail biter when the envelopes were opened. Until next Awards Season… Good night!

11:29pm

Meryl Streep! Total class act! She deserves it!

11:24pm

I love these intros! Best thing they’ve introduced on the Oscars in recent memory!

11:19pm

Wow! I’m so happy for Jean Dujardin and The Artist.

11:06pm

We lost so many greats…

10:58pm

Oprah looks so beautiful.

10:55pm

“14 times… [Meryl Streep] had to act like she was thrilled when another actress won, so for that I think she deserves another Oscar. …Two Oscars, two Emmys, Seven Golden Globes. She’s either the greatest actress of our time or a really dedicated hoarder.” — Billy Crystal

10:53pm

Wow. The Artist, huh? I really need to see this movie. Congrats to the Director on his win!

10:50pm

It’s almost 11 o’clock and we are only now getting to the Best Director category? Yikes.

10:42pm

Very cute that Melissa McCarthy and Rose Byrne continued the Scorsese drinking game from the SAG Awards.

10:38pm

Don’t the other Bridesmaids get to say anything?

10:31pm

Our piping hot Oscars Best Dressed list is ready! Of course, it’s up for debate!

10:09pm

Billy Crystal’s “what are they thinking” skit. Hilarity.

10:01pm

Wow! Standing O for Best Supporting Actor winner Christopher Plummer. Looks like his fellow nominees didn’t have a chance. I have always loved Captain von Trapp!

9:54pm

Nicely played. Emma Stone was not nominated for her lead role in The Help, but she won the crowd with her presenter schtick.

9:45pm

Ha! Chris Rock is telling the truth!

9:42pm

I LOVE Gwyneth’s cape, but I’m glad she didn’t wear it on stage to present the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature.

9:26pm

“You go.” “No. Hugo.” Cute line from the Hugo team that just won for Achievement in Sound Editing.

9:12pm

Wow! So very happy for first time Oscar nominee and winner Octavia Spencer!! I loved her in The Help and Dinner for Schmucks.

9:09pm

Here’s a good one! Who do you think will win Best Supporting Actress?

8:59pm

“Thanks, Meryl, for keeping me employed for the last 37 years. Your brilliance makes my work look good no matter what.” — J. Roy Helland, winner of the Best Makeup Oscar

8:57pm

I love how they are using commentary from the actors and others in the industry to give us context on the great work the makeup artists did.

8:53pm

Ick. Didn’t need to know JLo and Cameron Diaz star in Billy Crystal’s “recurring dream.”

8:42pm

Ha! Cute shout-out to the actor/seat-filler. I kinda love his blue tux.

8:37pm

Has Justin Bieber dyed his hair a darker shade of brown?

8:20pm

Picking the best-dressed is going to be tough tonight. EVERYONE brought their A-game, but “A” might be for Angelina Jolie tonight in a high-slit Atelier Versace gown. I do wish she had gone with colored shoes to break up the black. What do you think?

8:16pm

I have to say, Giuliana Rancic looks really beautiful in her leaf-detail gown. Well-played by the E! Host.

8:00pm

WOW! GWYNETH PALTROW HAS NEVER LOOKED BETTER!

7:47pm

Jennifer Lopez‘s Zuhair Murad dress is getting mixed reviews from the E! panel. Personally, I think she looks fierce — though it’s hard to top the looks she’s been hitting us with from the American Idol Judges’ Table this season. What do you think?

7:30pm

OMG! EMMA STONE! Flawless. Flawless. Flawless. I wish she wore green but the red is popping!

7:27pm

Tina Fey looks super cute and chic in Carolina Herrera. She is the only one Carolina chose to wear her designs! Good pick I say!

Kristen Wiig looks so plain in J.Mendel. She could have gone with a pop of color instead of nude. Way too casual.

Kristen Wiig too plain in J.Mendel?

7:09pm

Jean Dujardin is so handsome and adorable. He doesn’t speak English fluently yet you would never know!

6:54pm

OMG! Michelle Williams in the coral Louis Vuitton. I knew she was going to throw on a pop of color and surprise us all!

Rooney Mara surprises us all in a WHITE Givenchy! She always wears black! She also only picked it this morning! Crazy!

6:43pm

Viola Davis made a splash with the green mermaid cut dress by Vera Wang. It seems like she is channeling Ariel from The Little Mermaid and I love it.

6:36pm

The women usually outshine the men but how can you not love George Clooney in Armani?

6:24pm

Nominee, Jessica Chastain looks GORGEOUS! This black and gold dress by Alexander McQueen is a risk yet she pulled it off flawlessly! Love the print!

6:15pm

Love that most of the cast of Bridesmaids came in a sequins and sparkle! And they showed up at the same time coincidentally. They are reading each others’ minds.

5:56pm

Milla Jovovich looks stunning in a Eli Saab champagne-colored, off-one-shoulder dress. Going to be hard to beat!

5:35pm

I am loving Kelly Osbourne in Badgley Mischka! It’s straight from the runway!

Here we go! I’m super excited to see what’s hitting the red carpet! I’m very excited to see Emma Stone, Charlize Theron and Angelina Jolie (of course). They always(!) know how to pull off an amazing look for the carpet.
