When we last heard from Trang Huyen, the Pensacola, FL blogger who beat out seven fierce competitors to win the inaugural America’s Most Stylish Blogger title, she was literally speechless. “I’m a pretty shy person,” the blogger admits, preferring to let her super-femme approach to the season’s biggest trends do the yapping for her on her extremely engaging, only-a-year-old blog, Behind the Seams.
It’s an interesting place that Trang and her fellow fashion bloggers occupy. As fashion bloggers’ impact on fashion grows, the anonymity many of them enjoy has begun to erode. We checked in with Trang to find out what life’s been like since she snagged the unanimous endorsements of guest judges Nicole Miller, Kelly Cutrone, Adam Lippes, Natalie Chanin and Tibi’s Amy Smilovic, plus the thousands of you who voted her America’s Most Stylish.
How have things changed for you and your blog Behind the Seams since you won the America’s Most Stylish Blogger competition?
My visitor count and traffic have increased tremendously. Other than the surprise blog explosion, my lifestyle in general is pretty much the same — I’m still a small town girl who loves to blog and document my fashion adventures.
Between 13-year-old blogger Tavi Gevinson’s front row tour of Fashion Week, Vogue‘s secret blogger shoot, and the recent NY Times article on bloggers’ changing the pecking order at fashion shows, how do you think fashion bloggers are impacting fashion & style culture?
Fashion bloggers are exposing readers to new perspectives on fashion that mainstream media will sometimes not cover. The online fashion community interacts and expresses ideas with one another, which I believe can have important social influence on how style and fashion are perceived.
If you weren’t competing for the America’s Most Stylish Blogger title, which blogger would you have voted for?
Every one of the bloggers was stylish and unique in her own way. My lips are sealed on this one!
The guest judges in the America’s Most Stylish Blogger competition pretty much unanimously loved your style. Which judge’s endorsement were you most surprised by?
Kelly Cutrone! I love watching her on The Hills and The City. From what I’ve seen on television, she doesn’t sugarcoat anything — she tells it like it is, so you can imagine how unbelievably nerve racking it was for me when my photo was the first she critiqued! Her positive remarks were a complete honor!

JANUARY: The Obama Inauguration
Between Beyonce’s pre-inauguration serenade in liquid leggings, Aretha Franklin’s hat, and the “What Will Michelle Wear?” frenzy that had designers and aspirants in a sketching frenzy for the First Lady‘s attention, the January Inauguration was the hottest fashion show of the year and fashion week hadn’t even happened yet.
FEBRUARY: Project Runway Fashion Show Happens Without Project Runway Show
Embargoed by litigation, the Project Runway Season 6 fashion show finale went on, but the contestants could not introduce their collections at Bryant Park as has been the tradition. (We’re so glad it came back!)

During Fashion Week, where Kanye was Amber Rose was — rocking her signature blond baldie, bootie-sculpting bottoms, and diva-sized shades. Blogs (like The Cut & this one!) took notice.

Singer Lady Gaga was “Poker Face”-ing everywhere from American Idol to the top of the charts wearing platinum hair, masks, and Xanadu-reminiscent bodysuits. WWD remembered profiling her before the makeover.

The editor-in-chief’s immense influence on fashion was the star of RJ Cutler’s documentary which also highlighted the creative genius of stylist Grace Coddington (pictured left).
SEPTEMBER: Taylor Swift & Beyonce Share a VMA Moment in Red Dresses
After Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift’s VMA acceptance speech for “Best Female” video arguing that Beyonce’s also nominated “Single Ladies” clip should have won, Beyonce invited Swift to finish her speech when it was her turn to accept the “Best Video of the Year” MTV moon man. Both women happened to be wearing red dresses.
OCTOBER: Bluefly & StyleList Open Voting for America’s Most Stylish Blogger
Though she didn’t win the first challenge, America ultimately voted Pensacola blogger Trang Huyen most stylish.
NOVEMBER: 13 Year Old Blogger Tavi Gevinson is Guest of Honor at Comme Des Garçons’ Holiday Party
A few additional fashion moments in Tavi’s year: 1) She was Front Row at all the major Fashion Week shows; 2) She “define[d] Rodarte for Target” ; 3) She was officially one of the pundits polled about Lady Gaga’s style.
She might have to change her blog’s name from “Style Rookie” to “Don’t Be Jealous.”
DECEMBER: Jersey Shore “Fashionistas”???
Without warning, the “Situation” is this: we can’t go anywhere without hearing about the latest episode of MTV’s new reality show Jersey Shore. Will the show’s cultural moment translate into trends and eponymous clothing lines? We vote: hell to the naw.

Between Vogue‘s rumored blogger shoot and 13 year old blogging sensation Tavi‘s invitation to the Commes des Garcons show in Japan, it’s safe to say that 2009 has been the year of the fashion blogger.
Last month, Bluefly celebrated this phenomenon with the America’s Most Stylish Blogger contest which — after narrowing down from a hella thick stack of fashionista applicants — challenged eight style bloggers from across the country to style some of fall’s biggest trends over a five week contest. With America voting and fashion experts from Nicole Miller to Adam Lippes weighing in, Pensacola, FL’s own Trang Huyen won the top prize: a $1000 Bluefly shopping spree, a blogging column, and a Blogger Store on Bluefly which will launch in early 2010. (The rest of the group got to keep the lovely goodies they were asked to style — including a pair of studded Prada booties!) Here, Kelly Cutrone gives Trang and the blogosphere a shout-out. Back in the day, as Kelly points out, a girl like Trang would’ve had to get herself to New York or Milan, or be “discovered”. Now, with her blog and her sharp sartorial sense, Trang gets to discover herself.

Designer and Anna Wintour-darling Adam Lippes‘ classic American style could not be more different from the rebellious rock star approach to fashion of reality star & fashion publicist Kelly Cutrone but they both emphatically agreed Trang Huyen is the business when we asked them to comment on the Pensacola, Florida blogger’s style. “I don’t know who could do it better,” Lippes said of Trang’s Challenge 5 ensemble. “I love what she did with [her boyfriend look],” Cutrone said.
And week after week the fashion endorsements kept coming. Nicole Miller described Trang’s mini skirt ensemble as “a perfect outfit.” Tibi designer Amy Smilovic said of the look pictured above, “I love this look.” Sustainable-design diva and CFDA Vogue Fund nominee Natalie Chanin admitted of the rad plaid ensemble Trang put together for the fourth challenge, “This is my favorite of all the outfits.”
Obviously, the fashion community was in agreement. Trang was thousands of points ahead of her closest competitor when voting closed yesterday. But in spite of her winning all but the first challenge, Trang was “speechless” when we called her yesterday to let her know she’d won a $1000 Bluefly shopping spree, a guest column on StyleList.com, and the chance to curate her very own store on Bluefly. “I don’t know what to say,” she admitted breathlessly. “I’m thrilled!” She did catch her breath long enough to let us know she was also thrilled about the studded Prada booties she scored as part of her participation in the contest. “I’ve worn them everywhere!” she giggled.
During spring 2010 fashion week, leggings, a denim or leather jacket, and an easy tank or tee was pretty much the uniform of choice for the models sprinting breathlessly from the downtown shows at MILK Studios to Bryant Park’s midtown Manhattan tents. It’s an effortlessly fly look, but it’s easy to get wrong if you don’t know what you’re doing.
For our final America’s Most Stylish Blogger challenge, we gave our contestants a pair of Plan B tie-dyed leggings and asked them to style it their own way. Check out the looks they came up with and vote for the blogger who rocked their leggings best. The winner gets a Bluefly shopping spree, a guest blog column on AOL StyleList, and a branded blogger store on Bluefly. (You have a chance to win a $1000 shopping spree too — just for voting!)
