Last night’s Oscars were an anti-climactic end to Awards Show season. With the exception of Melissa Leo dropping the F-Bomb, there were no surprises. As expected, Natalie Portman, Colin Firth, Melissa Leo and Christian Bale took home the top acting honors with The King’s Speech snagging the Oscar for Best Picture.
The show itself seemed to have mixed goals. Hosts Anne Hathaway and James Franco were allegedly cast to lure younger viewers to the three hour long telecast, yet the theme was an homage to old Hollywood glamour. The result was a sometimes confusing battle of the generations featuring a funny auto-tune video remix of some clips of Harry Potter and other films… and Javier Bardem and James Brolin wearing matching vintage white Gucci jackets and bowties. Oh and James Franco dressed as Marilyn Monroe. It started to feel very SNL-esque after a while.
As for the fashion, after two months’ of red carpet events, the nominees and stars seemed to hit their respective strides with everyone looking pretty much beautiful. The color of the night was red with Anne Hathaway, Sandra Bullock, and Winter’s Bone nominee Jennifer Lawrence hitting the carpet in dresses that, well, matched the carpet. The men seemed to have worn the same monochrome tuxes and shirts they wore to the Golden Globes. I’m a fan of the black on black suit, but it may be time for the guys to try something else (maybe the electric blue suits at the Fall 2011 Men’s Calvin Klein show?). Mila Kunis looked incredible in lavender Elie Saab Couture as did Sandra Bullock in a sharp red Vera Wang gown with lips to match. But I’d say the best dressed was Rachel Zoe. The stylist may be on pregnancy hiatus, but her presence was definitely felt as client Anne Hathaway dazzled in a new designer gown everytime a new segment of the show began.
