There’s a new Olympic swimsuit in town — or at least there could be thanks to the passage of USA Swimming’s proposal to regulate the use of swimsuit technologies proven to enhance swimmers’ speeds. According to the AP, “The new rule states: ‘No swimmer shall be permitted to use or wear any device OR SWIMSUIT that may aid his speed, buoyancy or endurance during a competition,’ with the new words in capital letters.”
USA Swimming’s beef isn’t only with new air-trapping swimsuit fabrics either. Along with the Australian swim team, the Americans also want FINA, the international body that governs swimming, diving, water polo, synchronized swimming and open water swimming to “limit swimsuit coverage beyond the shoulders and below the knees.” Not sure what this means, but it would be pretty cool for cut-outs, hardware, bikinis and one-shoulder one-pieces to hit the Olympic pools. Certainly, a better alternative to the old-fashioned briefs incoming FINA president Maglione is said to favor.
