That’s what the Washington Post discusses this morning. Designing for the First Lady in the past has often been the preserve of older white male designers (think Oleg Cassini for Jackie or Nancy Reagan in Adolfo). Hillary was the only one who bucked the trend with Donna Karen. Michelle Obama, on the other hand, has chosen to wear many pieces from minority designers like Thakoon Panichgul and women designers like Maria Pinto. (Michelle Obama wore her blue dress, above, for the Democratic National Convention, and Pinto is a lead contender for possibly designing the new First Lady’s Inauguration gown.) The hope during Michelle Obama’s time in the White House is that she will continue in this fashion, highlighting the work of those who could benefit from even a one-time wearing of their shirt, jacket or dress.
