An Icon Passes

dorothea-church.jpgHaving walked the runways for Christian Dior and Elsa Schiaparelli in the 1950′s, Dorothea Towles Church was quite a lady. The first black model to successfully catwalk in Paris, she was an inspiration to many, and can be remembered at the Museum of the City of New York in September when she will be featured in the exhibition “Black Style Now.” Without Dorothea, there would be no Naomi, no Alek and no Tyra. “If you’re beautiful, they don’t care what color you are,” she once said.
